If you often feel tired at home despite not doing much activities, you should beware of the possibility of carbon monoxide (CO) gas contamination. Starting from fatigue, continuous CO gas poisoning can continue with permanent brain damage.
CO gas is a gas which is odorless and colorless derived from waste products of incomplete combustion of various types of fuels containing carbon. Among other are fuel for motor vehicles, coal, charcoal and firewood.
If inhaled by the respiratory tract, this gas will be absorbed into the blood and binds with hemoglobin (Hb) or red blood substance. Because the function of hemoglobin is carrying oxygen, the presence of CO causes oxygen supply not distributed so you quickly feel tired.
“When binding with hemoglobin, CO are 200 times more stronger than oxygen. In a few levels, CO can cause effects that can be felt like being tired,” said an expert in toxicologyin the UK, Laura Robinson, according to the Dailymail.
Fatigue which cause is not known, must be watched as the early symptoms of CO poisoning. Because if allowed untreated, this gas can accumulate and cause damage to the sensors of vision, hearing and memory.
Indoor CO gas poisoning could be helped as long as the source of pollution is stopped immediately. But if it is already severe, statistics show a third of all cases that have occurred may cause permanent damage in the brain.
To prevent contamination of CO gas at home, avoid heating the vehicle inside the house or garage, especially in a closed condition. When cooking in the kitchen, make sure air circulation is maintained and if necessary turn on the exhaust fan.
“Fatigue of CO poisoning are often ignored, many think they are not feeling well then prefer to take a rest in their homes. But if the true source of pollution is in the house, it must be taken care immediately so it won’t get worse,” added Robinson.
